Simulation Step 2 of 15: Segment Page Process in Attention PhaseDuring the attention phase, users generate a schematic representation of the page as a collection of regions with a brief description of each region. The figure shows the result of this process. The figure shows the names of regions, including:
The Segment Page process consists of bottom-up and top-down processes that determine the collection of regions used to represent a page. Bottom-up processes utilize low-level perceptual features, like color contrasts and outlined shapes, to partition the page. Top-down processes are controlled by a user's knowledge of the conventional elements of a typical page for a given website or type of website. Nielsen (2000) has shown that most users scan web pages rather than reading them, and we assume that the scanning process results in focusing on one region that is most similar to the user's goal. The page represented by regions serves as input to the next process, Focus on One Region. Press Next ==> to proceed.
